Mama, wa dat?

The English language is lacking nouns. Surely there are items for which there is no name - like the ball thing that's part of the handle on the shower door. Or an individual non-skid dot on a slipper. Or the rod-looking thing that sticks out of the car door. Mommy has been asked about all of these things recently. "Mama, wa dat?" And Mommy tries really, really hard to come up with the correct, or at least a plausible noun for each item. But, there are times when Mommy resorts to "thingy" or "that's a thing" or, if she's really desperate it turns into a game: "that's an elephant" "that's Abbie's tooth" "that's Abbie's belly button."

According to a mom at the zoo, during the upcoming "why" stage we'll look back fondly on the ease with which "what's that?" can be answered.
